A persistent 50 – 60 percent of Americans do not feel well represented by either of the two major political parties and believe a third party is needed. Join us as we explore the Independent Party of Oregon. Learn what this party is and what it stands for.

Senator Betsy Johnson (D-Scappoose)

Senator Betsy Johnson is serving her third term in the Oregon Senate. The appointment came as Senator Johnson began her 3rd term in the Oregon House of Representatives.

In the 2015 Legislative Session, Senator Johnson serves as the Vice Co-Chair of the Joint Committee on Ways and Means, Co-Chair of the Ways and Means Transportation and Economic Development Subcommittee, and member of the Ways and Means General Government Subcommittee.  Senator Johnson has served on Ways and Means since her first session.

A licensed commercial pilot of both fixed and rotor-wing aircraft, she founded Transwestern Helicopters, Inc. in 1978. The helicopter division of the firm was sold in 1993 and the company, now known as Transwestern Aviation, Inc., is managed by her husband, John Helm.

Dr. Knute Buehler, Oregon House of Representatives (District 54) Republican

Dr. Knute Buehler was a leader within the first Independent Party caucus. Knute was elected to a two-year term to represent Bend in Salem. As a state representative during the 2015 legislative session, Knute served on the House Health Care and Housing and Human Services committees, along with being vice-chair of the Consumer Protection and Government Effectiveness committee.

A native Oregonian, Knute grew up in Roseburg and earned a degree in microbiology from Oregon State University where he played baseball and was the university’s first Rhodes Scholar. After attending Oxford University, where he studied politics and economics, Knute earned his medical degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. While at Johns Hopkins, Knute met Patty – his wife of 25 years and they have two children – Owen and Hannah.

Robert Harris, attorney and founder of Harris Law Firm

Robert Harris became involved in the Independent Party of Oregon in 2010 and has assisted in the party’s nomination process as well as offering advice on policy. Robert received his law degree in 1986. He worked for a large law firm and as a prosecutor before founding Harris Law Firm in 1997. His firm now has two offices and 10 attorneys. Along with managing his firm, Robert counsels businesses and individuals in real estate, business and estate planning.

A Hillsboro resident, he heads the Washington County Bench/Bar committee. He also founded and is the executive director of the largest non-profit Washington County Indigent Defense Consortium. He is also the editor of the independent news site Oregon Outpost. Robert has been married for 30 years and is a father of three daughters.
